Botulinum Toxin in Bruxism Treatment

Botox Application

We apply Botulinum Toxin to reduce the strength of the chewing muscles in case of wear of the teeth, which we call generalized attrition, in people who are clenching their teeth. We apply botulinum toxin to people who start to show signs of bruxist, that is, teeth clenching, temporomandibular joint, that is, the jaw joint. These people may have symptoms such as head and neck pain, muscle aches and waking up tired in the morning. As a result of Botulinum Toxin application, we provide treatment by eliminating these symptoms.

Bilateral injection of Botulinum Toxin into the masseter muscles (both regions) significantly reduces the severity of symptoms (such as pain, locking and clenching of the jaws) for 6-78 weeks (mean 19 ± 17 weeks). Botox application is equally effective on bruxism when compared to oral splint, but its rate of action is slower than Botulinum Toxin.
